Monday, May 13, at ISC High Performance 2024, Hewlett Packard Enterprise announced that it has delivered the world’s second exascale supercomputer, Aurora, in collaboration with Intel for the United States Department of Energy’s Argonne National Laboratory. HPE reports that Aurora has achieved 1.012 exaflops, ranking it as the world’s second-fastest supercomputer according to the TOP500 list of the most powerful supercomputers.

Rich Whitmore, President and CEO of Motivair, congratulated the teams at HPE, Intel, Argonne National Lab, and Motivair for their collaborative achievement in enabling and launching Aurora, now the world's second-fastest supercomputer.

Planned as an AI-capable system with direct liquid cooling, Aurora will enable researchers to use generative AI models to accelerate scientific discoveries.

Researchers have already conducted some early AI-driven research on the system, including brain mapping to better understand the human brain’s 80 billion neurons, enhancing high-energy particle physics with deep learning, and accelerating drug design and discovery with machine learning.

An exascale computing system processes one quintillion operations per second.
