Cooling Technology Promoting Sustainability

Whether it’s investing in forward-thinking Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) policies or finding a way to have a company make a measurable impact on sustainability, the proof is there: Consumers want to see more from companies about what they can do to make the world better.

And Motivair, in recognition of this year’s Earth Day, is committed to helping the world’s leading companies make the world a better, more sustainable environment through cutting-edge cooling systems and liquid cooling platforms.

ESG, CLIMATE CHANGE, AND ROI
Shareholders are getting serious about sustainability. Studies show a correlation between sustainable business practices, share prices, and business performance. Companies that develop strong ESG standards have better profitability, stronger financials, and more resilient stock performance.

While there is no federal mandate or action on environmental issues like climate change, movements like the Paris Agreement and Americas Pledge help unify organizations, states, and cities to decarbonize to mitigate climate change. Examples of electrification, the process of substituting technologies using fossil fuels, include shifting from diesel to electric-powered vehicles, or, in buildings, shifting to technologies like air or water source heat pumps.

SUSTAINABLE LIQUID COOLING
Direct-to-Chip Liquid Cooling uses a closed loop of fluid that circulates continuously to remove heat which is about 10x more efficient than using traditional methods such as air cooling.
Liquid cooling can alleviate and reduce your dependency on traditional air-cooling methods. You can:

  • Conduct heat better than air
  • Increase compute-intensive applications.
  • Use less water than traditional air-cooling methods.
  • Reduce your data center footprint, allowing for more compute deployments

Direct liquid cooling, utilized in an end-to-end solution, can create a domino-effect of less dependency on traditional air-cooling systems like chillers, condensers, and CRACS/CRAHs. It can lead to a reduction in water consumption, energy usage, and noise pollution.

COOLING SOLUTIONS FOR GREEN INITATIVES
As climate change continues to be a more persistent issue, so do efforts to combat it. Specifically decarbonization – the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions using low carbon power sources – is helping pave the way.

Air source heat pumps can help reduce carbon emissions, as unlike oil or propane, cold-climate air source heat pumps don’t require combustion of fossil fuels or fuel storage. This eliminates the potential release of carbon monoxide while improving air quality.

Air source heat pumps extract heat from the air outside and distribute it inside a building. During warmer months, this process is reversed to provide cool air by pulling heat out of a building.
According to NREL, electrification in key industries like transportation, buildings, industrial, and manufacturing coupled with decarbonization of electricity generation has been identified as one of the key ways to achieving a low-carbon future.

“… By 2050, electrification and simultaneous power sector decarbonization can achieve reductions of nearly 74% below the 2005 level of economy-wide fossil fuel combustion emissions. Furthermore, even in the absence of policies to lower the emissions intensity of electricity generation, electrification alone can have a significant impact on GHG emissions,” NREL said.

EARTH DAY’S BEGINNINGS
US Senator Gaylord Nelson saw the effects of a massive California oil spill and called on Americans to take a stand for the environment in 1970. It catalyzed Americans to take a stand for corporate accountability and more sustainable practices.

The first Earth Day, started more than 50 years ago, helped spur the creation of the United States Environmental Protection Agency and the Clean Air, Clean Water, and Endangered Species acts.

MOTIVAIR COOLING TECHNOLOGY HELPING LEAD THE WAY
One example of Motivair cooling technology helping sustainability is in electric vehicle production.

Recently, an electric vehicle manufacturer required our process chiller technology to help cool dynometers, which benchmark and measure an engine’s output regarding force, torque and power generated by a vehicle.

From engine testing to environmental climate chamber testing to battery liquid cooling, manufacturers are now depending on industrial grade air-cooled & water-cooled chillers.

They need to deliver process fluid temperatures as low as -25*F year-round with zero downtime, optimal manufacturing and testing conditions, and zero downtime for reliable results. To learn more about that application, click here.

While electric vehicles may sound like a niche operation, their popularity has exploded in recent years. In fact, Some companies are aggressively chasing net-zero carbon status and using electric vehicles to achieve that.

Amazon last year announced it would deploy 100,000 custom electric vehicles for your Prime deliveries. The e-commerce giant ordered 100,000 custom electric delivery vehicles from Rivian, marking the largest order ever of electric delivery vehicles, planned to be on the road by 2030.
