Race for Exascale Supercomputing
Forbes.com staff writer, Aaron Tilley, discusses the recent investments made by global powers to reach exascale supercomputing. Tilley highlights the capital investments made by the U.S. government as well as China to develop and build the fastest supercomputer in the world. He also highlights the advantages from a security and research standpoint of being the first global power to achieve such a significant feat.
One could argue that the race for exascale supercomputing draws a parallel to the 20th-century “Space Race” between the United States and former Soviet Union (USSR). At that time, supremacy in spaceflight capability was considered essential for national security as well as ideological superiority.
