ChilledDoor, CDU Technology Used for HPC Applications

Two major government entities have recently announced projects for their supercomputing systems that are being cooled by products offered by Motivair Corporation.  The recent announcements solidify Motivair’s flexible design capabilities and solutions for High Performance Computing (HPC) applications.

The first project is a recent upgrade of NOAA’s (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) supercomputer system, located in multiple sites across the East Coast of the United States.  This system is used by NOAA to monitor critical weather events, which according to the latest press release from NOAA “…enhance NOAA’s abilities to predict and warn American communications of destructive weather.”

With the latest system upgrade, NOAA adds 2.8 petaflops of processing speed at both sites. The system includes a deployment of Motivair’s ChilledDoor® Rack Cooling Systems working in tandem with Coolant Distribution Units (CDUs), also supplied by Motivair.

Even more recently, it was just announced Motivair’s in-rack Coolant Distribution Unit (CDU) will be used as part of Aquila’s fixed cold plate warm water cooling technology.  The Aquarius HPC system is currently being studied at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) for Sandia National Labs.

One of the unique features of the new system is its ability to attach directly to existing data center facility water infrastructure with a rack mount CDU from Motivair, the preferred CDU vendor for Aquila.

A recent press release on the project addresses the cooling capability of the overall system and its ability to improve data center efficiency.  Regarding this project, Judy Beckes Talcott, President of Aquila, states:

“We are excited to be working with NREL and Sandia National Laboratories, as these DOE labs provide a leadership position in innovative liquid cooling and other cutting-edge efficiency-driven data center technologies. We feel their leadership will help shape the future of HPC and influence the modern data center designer towards adoption of liquid cooling. Our shared vision holds the promise of improving data center energy efficiency by as much as 50%.”
